These simple "butterfly" type backdraught dampers have lightweight hinged blades which will only open in one direction, preventing airflow in the opposite direction. They feature a small spring to keep them in the closed position without causing significant back pressure when the fan is running.

Backdraught dampers are normally used on ducted extract systems to prevent cold outside air from being blown back into the building when the fan is turned off.

For airflow control in ventilation systems, the aluminium blades will open when blades are exposed to overpressure and will shut again when pressure falls away, thanks to a stainless steel mechanical spring.

Back draught shutters, also known as non-return dampers, are designed to permit air to flow in only one direction, making them useful for applications where a duct is only used at intervals, and needs to be shut down when not in use to prevent heat loss or backflow.
